Vehicle description
This 1972 Alfa Romeo Montreal is one of a claimed 3,925 examples produced and is said to have been initially sold in Bari, Italy, before being imported to the US under previous ownership. Acquired by the seller in 1988 out of California, the car was the subject of a mechanical refurbishment in the mid-2000s and has since spent time in Maryland and Colorado. Power is provided by a 2.6-liter quad-cam V8 equipped with a SPICA fuel injection system that was rebuilt in 2021. A repaint in black was carried out in 2023, after which the front seats were re-trimmed in tan upholstery and the carpets were replaced. The car rides on 14″ Campagnolo wheels and has been fitted with a custom dual exhaust system featuring an H-pipe as well as Cherry Bomb glasspack-style mufflers, while shifting is via a ZF five-speed manual transmission. Work performed in 2024 is noted to have involved installing a Walbro electric fuel pump as well as replacing the clutch master cylinder, battery, and right-lower rear trailing arm. This Montreal is now offered with a seller-provided service summary, various removed components, and a clean Colorado title in the name of the seller and their spouse.
The Montreal was designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, and styling elements include a NACA duct on the hood, retractable headlight covers, and six slats stacked vertically behind each side window. This example underwent a color change from metallic green to black under previous ownership. The front spoiler was replaced in 2005, and following collision damage in 2023, the seller states that the right taillight assembly was replaced and repairs were performed to the left and right quarter panels, rear valance, and fuel tank prior to a repaint of the body in its current black finish. LED taillamp and indicator bulbs have been installed along with a left-side mirror and replacement badging.
Silver 14″ Campagnolo wheels are mounted with 195/70 BFGoodrich Traction T/A tires, while a matching spare wheel with an older Yokohama tire is stored in the trunk compartment. Braking is handled by power-assisted four-wheel discs. The car was lowered by cutting the springs and removing the factory spring spacers. The seller states that the steering box has been reinforced with steel plates and that adjustable upper control arms have been installed. The right-lower rear trailing arm and bushings were replaced in 2024.
The cabin is noted to have been refreshed in 2024 and features front bucket seats upholstered in tan cloth with vinyl sides in addition to a split rear bench. The carpets along with the shift and parking brake boots were replaced this year, and additional appointments include a heater, power windows, three-point front seatbelts, and rear luggage straps. The Blaupunkt cassette stereo does not work, and the air conditioning components have been removed. Cracks are visible in the dashboard and luggage cover, and the vents along the upper dash are warped.
A wood-rimmed Hellebore steering wheel frames Jaeger instrumentation including a 260-km/h speedometer, a 9k-rpm tachometer, a clock, and gauges monitoring fuel level, amperage, water temperature, oil temperature, and oil pressure. The windshield washer is not connected, and the dashboard headlight and turn signal indicators do not work. The five-digit odometer shows 61k kilometers (~38k miles), approximately 35k kilometers of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 2.6-liter quad-cam V8 was factory rated at 197 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque and reportedly received replacement timing chains, seals, and gaskets in 2005. The SPICA fuel injection system was rebuilt by Ingram Enterprises in 2021, at which time the starter was also serviced. Further equipment is said to include an uprated water pump seal and bearing along with a Delco-Remy alternator and Howard ignition components. The seller states that a number of fuel, coolant, and heater hoses were replaced in 2022, while a Walbro electric fuel pump and a replacement battery were installed in 2024. The fuel cut-off solenoid is inoperative, and a service summary provided by the seller is viewable in the gallery below.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a ZF five-speed manual transmission that was resealed in 2005, per the seller. The car has been fitted with a custom dual exhaust system featuring an H-pipe as well as Cherry Bomb glasspack-style mufflers, and the clutch master cylinder is noted to have been replaced in anticipation of the sale. Corrosion is visible along the spare wheel well and rear battery tray.
