Vehicle description
This 1957 Porsche 356A Speedster was completed in September 1957 and acquired by the seller’s father in 1998 in the San Francisco Bay Area. The car has been repainted red over black upholstery and is powered by a replacement 1.6-liter flat-four equipped with dual Zenith carburetors linked with a four-speed manual transaxle. It rides on 15″ chrome steel wheels with “baby moon” hubcaps and is further equipped with a black convertible top, a tonneau cover, side curtains, four-wheel drum brakes, and a wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel. Work performed in May 2023 involved adjusting the carburetors, bleeding the brakes, and replacing the CV boots. This 356A Speedster is offered by the seller on behalf of their mother with manufacturer’s literature, a Porsche Production Specifications certificate, and a clean California title.
Delivered from the factory in Aquamarine Blue, the Reutter-built bodywork was repainted red under previous ownership. The black convertible top is accompanied by matching side curtains, a top boot, and a tonneau cover. Further exterior details include dual side mirrors, a Reutter badge affixed to the right-front fender, gold-color badging, and body-color bumpers without overriders. The seller notes chips in the finish, and paint meter readings are shown in the gallery.
Chrome-finished 15″ steel wheels wear “baby moon” hubcaps and are mounted with 165-width Goodyear G-Metric tires, as is a full-size spare wheel housed in the front trunk compartment. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, and the brake fluid was bled in May 2023.
Originally trimmed in red leatherette, the cabin was refreshed under previous ownership with black leatherette over the fixed-back bucket seats, door panels, upper dash, and rear seat bottoms. Charcoal square-weave carpeting lines the seatbacks, footwells, and sills, while black rubber mats cover the floors. Further appointments include lap belts, map pockets, an adjustable rearview mirror, and a chrome passenger-side grab handle.
A wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel sits ahead of a body-color dash fascia housing green-letter VDO instrumentation including a central 6k-rpm tachometer, a 200-km/h speedometer, and a combination gauge monitoring oil temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 65k kilometers (~40k miles), approximately 8k of which were added under current ownership.
The replacement 1.6L Type 616/12 flat-four wears engine stamp P705322, which indicates original production for a 1963 356B. The dual Zenith carburetors were adjusted in May 2023 and are topped with Knecht air cleaners.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transaxle. An exhaust leak was repaired in May 2023, at which time the CV boots were replaced. The seller notes rust along the battery tray as well as a square-shaped cut in an area along the rear floor pan.
The Porsche Production Specifications certificate shows a completion date in September 1957 and lists factory colors and options. Manufacturer’s literature will also accompany the car.
