This 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 is a running project that was acquired by the seller in 2006. It is #432 of approximately 2,800 North American-Specification examples imported into the US for the model year and is finished in Alpine White over Slate Gray vinyl. Equipment includes 16″ five-spoke wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, an ARB front bumper, a roof rack, a pop-up glass sunroof, a winch, IPF driving lights, air conditioning, an Alpine stereo, and rear jump seats. Power is provided by a 4.0-liter V8 linked with a four-speed automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a dual-range transfer case. This Defender 90 NAS is offered at no reserve with a clean Carfax report and a clean Maryland title in the seller’s name.
NAS models were equipped with a roll cage from the factory, and this example features aluminum body panels finished in Alpine White with black wheel arch flares. Additional features include an ARB front bumper, a roof rack, a winch, IPF driving lights, side steps, and a receiver hitch. A rear plaque identifies this truck as #432 of approximately 2,800. The rear crossmember and rear door are said to have been replaced in 2021. Dings, corrosion, and faded paint are visible around the vehicle.
The 16″ five-spoke wheels are mounted with 265/75 Cooper Discoverer AT3 tires, and a matching spare is secured to the rear. Braking is from power-assisted discs at all four corners.
The cabin features front bucket seats and four rear jump seats upholstered in Slate Gray vinyl, which are accompanied by a gray dashboard and door panels. Interior amenities include air conditioning, an Alpine stereo, a pop-up glass sunroof, and a locking center console. The steering wheel is worn and there are tears in the seats.
Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer as well as gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level. The digital odometer indicates 320k miles, approximately 256k of which were added under current ownership. The odometer’s digital display works intermittently.
The 4.0-liter V8 was factory rated at 182 horsepower and 233 lb-ft of torque. According to the seller, the serpentine belt and tensioner were replaced in 2020, the starter was replaced in 2021, and the alternator was replaced in 2023. Work in 2024 is said to have included replacing the thermostat and oil cooler hoses. The seller notes that the engine runs hot when the air conditioning is on and notes a tapping noise.
Power is sent to all four wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a dual-range transfer case. The transmission does not downshift consistently according to the seller. Rust damage is present on the frame and is shown in the gallery below.
